Why I run...

I posted this on facebook about a month or so ago when I ran with one of my bestest friends:

So today I finished the Rhodes City run with the most inspirational woman I know. 9 months ago I thought I had lost my running buddy forever. Today she ran the entire 10K (with one potty break) in 1:03! I remember a day 9 months ago when they hoisted her up from her wheel chair in a harness and let her "walk" on the treadmill, with her feet barely touching the mat. I thought...we will never run together again. Today, the reason I run came back to me: the friendship, companionship, the whining, the advice given/received, the "what is talked about in the park stays in the park", the crying, the laughing, the "watch for cars I have to pee", watch for the candy wrappers so we know Joe is ahead of us, think of the hill as a speed bump, etc!! Not the: did I finish in the top 10 in my age group, did I PR, will I go to Boston, can I do better next year? None of that matters, just knowing I CAN run is all that matters!! And now I have my running buddy back!!! Love you Kim!!

Today we finished the Kentucky Derby Minimarathon in 2:44. Kim, in her sparkly turquoise skirt, ran the entire race with the exception of one potty break and a few times to stop, stretch and drink some water. I was so inspired with her determination to finish this race even though she was in a lot of pain (knees). We were at mile 10 or so and she told me to go on ahead and finish with a decent time and I told her I took the timing chip off my bib and was only wearing it so I could get pictures later! Well, she started crying and hugging me! Again, I had to tell her we had 3 more miles to go and stop crying and she could cry all she wanted after the run. Again, I cherish the times we ran together and the future runs we will have together. She has re-earned the name Big Brown...that is a whole other blog!

Kim, I still love you and am so proud of you!!!!!!

Finger Pointing

So...I was taking the tweenager to get her allergy shots and made a comment (simply stating that her earrings matched her socks & did she do that on purpose) and she took it upon herself to point her finger directly in my face!!!!!! Guess what.....THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN or she may not see the outside of her room for quite some time!

Running

I am a runner, my husband is a runner, my daughter is a runner...a very good runner. My man-child was not a runner until a few months ago and he decided to become a runner and maybe join the cross country team at school. He has been running several days a week and today he ran a 5:58 mile...nuff said!

Happy Easter!

The Story of the Resurrection

Excerpted from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible

Matthew 28

1: Now after the sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the sepulchre. 2: And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. 3: His appearance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. 4: And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5: But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6: He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7: Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Lo, I have told you." 8: So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
Mark 16
1: And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2: And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3: And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" 4: And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; -- it was very large. 5: And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. 6: And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. 7: But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you."
Luke 24
1: But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. 2: And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3: but when they went in they did not find the body. 4: While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; 5: and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6: Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7: that the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." 8: And they remembered his words, 9: and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest.
John 20
1: Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2: So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." 3: Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. 4: They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; 5: and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6: Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, 7: and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. 8: Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9: for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10: Then the disciples went back to their homes.
11: But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; 12: and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13: They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." 14: Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15: Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." 16: Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rab-bo'ni!" (which means Teacher). 17: Jesus said to her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." 18: Mary Mag'dalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Frozen waffles...

How many ways can a teenager eat a frozen waffle?

Let me see:
with peanut butter and cream cheese
with pb & j
with honey and butter
with butter and syrup
with pb and banana
plain
butter only
pb only
with pb and honey
with pb and apples
cheese and mayo (this from the tweenager)

Anything you put between 2 pieces of bread, you can put between 2 waffles!

You can have it for breakfast, brunch, lunch, linner, dinner and as an after school snack. You can either toast it or microwave it depending on your mood.

My teenagers eat atleast 48 frozen waffles a week!!! Their favorite is Eggo Homestyle Waffles over the generic brand. My freezer isn't big enough to hold enough to last an entire week and have some left over!

20th Wedding Anniversary

20 years ago today at 5pm I have officially been married 20 years (yes, to the same person). It has been a good 20 years. We have had our ups and downs like every marriage has, but we have survived. We have 2 children and had many different types of pets along the way. Currently we are pet free and will be from this point on. We have moved 3 different time and settled into our current home 12 years ago. I love my husband very much and can't imagine being married to anyone else. We are celebrating our anniversary with a nice dinner out (kid free) and later this summer we will go on our first cruise (as a family). Hopefully while we are in the Virgin Islands, I will get a new wedding set. I love the set I have, but just really want something new. I am not sure why, but I do. I don't need a bigger diamond, again just something new.

I still remember our wedding day vividly. I stayed at the house we lived in and he went to stay with a friend. He called what seemed like a dozen times that afternoon while I was trying to get ready, just to see how/what I was doing. We were married in a Baptist church near our house. We had a small wedding, probably only about 40 people there. The reception was a good time. My Dad catered, cheap photographer (that to this day I regret not splurging), DJ, and open bar at the local VFW. The night felt like it only lasted a few minutes. I would love to do it over again and sit back and really enjoy the night.

We went to the Virgin Islands for our honeymoon. It was the first time I had been on an airplane. We had a good time! I remember that we mostly stayed at our hotel for the week, not really much exploring!

At the time I was a new RN and he was new to the police department. We spent the first few years working like crazy, saving money to build our dream home (which we sold after our 1st child was born). Both on night shift seeing each other very little. Some nights when it was slow he would come to the hospital and visit with me. I loved seeing him in his uniform and loved showing him off to my friends :)

We are both still working. I am still a RN and he is the Assistant Chief of Police at the Baptist Seminary (retired from the LMPD). Our kids are growing and we will be empty nesters in 5 years, which is a blink of the eye. That is why I am doing this blog, not to get a bunch of follower, but to put my memories where my kids can go back and read what goes on in the family life of the Burgins!

Questions of the week...

So here are a few questions/statements by the tweenager:

1. Can you make you baby a boy or girl by how much meat you eat?
2. Was Dad in HS when you were in MS?
3. You were 20 when you were in HS? (after answering how old I was when I married her Dad)
4. You want me to do that now?
5. Do I have to eat?
6. I feel asleep in class today!
7. I am going to bed early tonite (alien invasion?)!
8. The kids behind me think a mile is one time around the school track. I almost told them no, it's 4 DUH, but decided to let them figure it out on their own!!!!
9. That is hard core! What does that mean?
10. I am glad I am not crying because a boy won't go out with me! Gotta love her

Sleepovers...

So the tweenager is going to a "sleepover" tonight. Why do we call them that? The girls DON'T sleep! The should be renamed "stayupallnightovers". I will pick her up tomorrow and ask her how things went, and it will go something like this:

Mom, "How was it?"
TA, "Fine"
Mom, "What did you guys do?"
TA, "I don't know"
Mom, "What time did you go to bed?"
TA, "I don't know"
Mom, "What time was it when you last saw the clock?"
TA, "5am"

Mom, looks over at the tweenager and she is asleep. We will get home and she will wake up, groggy and grouchy. I will stay away from her and try to get her to bed before her bedtime so that she can get some sleep before CATS testing next week.

I post this in red because this will be the color of her eyes and her attitude!
Wish me luck!!

Alien invasion...

So now I need to tell you about the other teenager in my house. I have a 15 year old son, who will be 16 in May and you know what that means... DRIVING!!!

My son was born after 12 hours of labor, horrible, painful labor! He had caused me trouble through most of my pregnancy. He decided during a fetal stress test to drop his heart rate, so I had to go once a week for the last several months of my pregnancy to have fetal stress testing. What a joy...NOT!

So, my baby was born with red hair and he was long and lean! Unlike my daughter, he required a lot of attention. Constant attention. He did not sleep in his own bed until he was about 6 years old, always had to have someone with him no matter where he was. He slept with a stuffed animal-Simba (from the Lion King) rubbing his belly with the tail until he fell asleep each night! Simba is put away safely til he has his own son.

He changed when Nintendo 64 entered our home. He didn't need us anymore. The addiction to video/computer systems had begun. He started playing without anyone teaching him how to use the controller...how does that happen?  Well it happens because my son is an extraordinary techie! He knows more about computers than anyone I know. He fixes all my friends computers, like when the blue screen of death appears or pictures won't down load, or it won't turn on, etc. He has even saved enough money to buy 2 computers of his own!

He struggled in school for a while. I think more so because he didn't enjoy the school he attended.  We changed schools when he started High School. The first 6 months were a struggle, then the light bulb came on and he started to "find" himself. He excelled in all of his classes and seem to be happier than ever. He "found" even more of himself as he became a sophomore...worried about how he look and smelled! He has turned into a handsome young man that I think an alien invaded!

I have to say that he is one of the most polite, well mannered teenage boys that I know. He is always complemented on his saying please and thank you!!! How many teenage boys do you know do that?

One of his preschool teachers always complemented him on well behaved he was, and I would always say, "Are you talking about my son?" Her answer will always stay with me..."You know you have done your job as a parent when your children are well behaved when your not around." That is my Man-Child!

In the beginning...

June 5, 1998 I gave birth to a chubby little black haired girl. They handed her to me and she was crying like all little newborns do but, her upper lip was HUGE!!! I thought something was wrong...put her back and give me my baby. Soon the swelling went down and she was absolutely gorgeous. She was a happy baby that didn't require a lot of attention. We could put her in her vibrating chair and she would sit there for hours at a time.

She continued to grow and develop just like little girls should except she grows very slowly. Did I mention she is very petite (off the lower end of the growth chart). She started school and things continued to go well. She was the "the girl everyone wants to eat lunch with" (quoted from her 1st grade teacher).

I noticed things changing around the 4th grade, small things at first...thinking she is just "coming into herself". Then bigger things...thinking she is hanging out with girls who like to socialize too much. Then as we entered middle school, a mouth came from somewhere, where? Ok, it is just adjusting to new school, new friends, etc. I will give her a break, give her some time. Time continued and so did her attitude, mouth, sarcasm, back talking, crying at the drop of a hat (and yes her lip still swells when she cries), stomping of the feet, slamming of the bedroom door and on and on and on. Finally I realized what was going on.... I HAD ENTERED TWEENAGEDOM!!!!!
